Welcome to the Judge Candidate Textbook! This book has been written by several judges over a couple of years, and it explains the fundamental rules of Magic: the Gathering with lots of illustrated examples.

This manual has been written for judge candidates who want to learn Magic rules technically and professionally in order to pass their Level 1 test, and for those who want to use their rules knowledge in real games and tournaments to solve complex play situations, without needing to know all possible corner cases and rules.

If you're just learning the game, you probably want to read the basic rulebook rather than this book. If you're already a judge and you want to hone your skills, you're welcome to refresh your knowledge here before moving to study the Comprehensive Rules.

The Judge Candidate Textbook is available in English, Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian. At the bottom of each page you'll find a row of buttons to switch to a different language, and two arrows to leaf through the book. You can also follow the links to build your own path or use the search field found in the footer.

The Textbook is also available for download as a PDF document. The light version has all the card images in the example boxes removed, which greatly reduces its size:

We're always working to improve our language and download options. If you want to contribute to the Textbook or give us feedback, feel free to contact us!
